A B*tch to Assemble...But Worth It

- Reviewed in the United States on March 3, 2020I felt it necessary to write a detailed review on this sideboard. Having read many of the other comments there are several I agree with, others I can’t say for sure other.
Overall, I’m very impressed with the final outcome and find the Tvilum sideboard sturdy, stylish and a great value for the price.
Tvilum states average assembly time as two hours with two people. I was able to do this by myself although it took me four hours. I also took my time and allowed for pre-assembly preparation. With this said, I’ll break this down to three categories: Unpacking, Preparation, and Assembly.
Unpacking – 30 Minutes: This unit arrives in three separate packages. Each is well protected with additional cardboard padding, foam and hard plastic corner guards, plastic strap ties and wrapped in heavy duty shrink wrap plastic. I was impressed Tvilum took the best possible precautions to ensure their product arrives undamaged from their factory to your door. One never knows what will happen in the journey. So if yours arrived damaged, blame one of the many carriers along the way, not Tvilum.
Unpacking also included opening up all the content boxes ensuring no damage and all pieces are accounted for.
Preparation – 45 minutes. After locating the directions, it was evident that more attention to detail was necessary. The directions lack any type of written text and the packing list is a bit extensive. So with an empty egg carton, and post it notes, I separated all the hardware into groups.
I agree with others that the paper directions are difficult to work with as they’re not stapled at the binder. I chose to download the .pdf version from the Tvilum website which and views on my tablet which helps. If you don’t have that option, I recommend you remove the packing list page as a reference, then staple or paperclip the remaining pages.
In the defense of Tvilum, I realize trying to translate directions into multiple languages could be an immense task, and still not achieve specific guidance. For me, with patience and close examination the pictures we very detailed. In my defense, I’m very mechanically inclined so I it wasn’t hard for me to figure out.
I recommend saving the long corrugated packing boards to place on your floor during assembly. Also save some of the white Styrofoam inserts to help support some of the pieces during assembly.
Assembly – 2 hours, 30 minutes:
Having all the hardware separated is like having all the pieces of a puzzle all face up and made the rest of the assembly fairly simple.
Although the directions prefer you not use a cordless drill/driver to prevent over torquing and damage, I did use a small drill driver whereas I can adjust the torque. This helps speed things up and then go back and hand tighten. As for the awl they depict, I cheated and used a tiny dill bit in my drill/driver. If you don’t have an awl, consider using the sharp point of a corkscrew, press only hard enough to make a slight indentation. The screw will do the rest. For a hammer, I used a hard rubber mallet.
I also recommend using wood glue to help secure the guide pegs and wooden pieces together. I typically use this on most furniture that requires assembly.
Following the directions it moved along and nicely. Agree that at some point, I would have been nice to have something written. Patience and attention to the detail allowed me to understand the right, left, up and down of each part. Each part is printed on the side, but not always quickly visible.
Assembly of the top drawers is of question. I’m okay using cam locks but the plastic push pins for the back side had me wondering how study this will be over time. I added some wood glue along all mating surfaces for added strength.
Again, I’m very impressed with the finished products. If you have any questions, please include here and I’ll answer the best I can.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 19, 2022Let me start by saying that my shipment arrived in perfect condition. That is significant. With as many heavy pieces as this item is comprised of, and how easily MDF is damaged, the pristine delivery is remarkable. It was very well packed in three separate boxes. Now the assembly. The recurring criticism of the assembly should not be ignored. If you do not have at least moderate mechanical skills and are able to readily break down a schematic, this is not the DIY project to take on yourself. The assembly booklet has no written instruction to explain any of the steps, and the illustrations are sometimes vague at best. Compound that with some hardware, fasteners and and methods that are decidedly different than typical furniture kits. There are some steps in the process, that if not done correctly, can be difficult if not impossible to correct without significant damage. With proper assembly and adjustments, it is a handsome, sturdy piece with nicely fitted doors and drawers. A good value for money, with the caveat that if you are not confident in your skills, find a friend to help or pay for installation.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 7, 2025This cabinet tests your common sense while assembling. It took me 3 solid hours, and I’m generally good at assembling furniture. The instructions are not the most intuitive, so take my advice: before you start, lay out all the screws and hardware and label them—it’ll save you a lot of frustration later. The first 10 steps are especially challenging and feel more like solving a puzzle than building furniture. Once you get through those, it gets a bit easier. The final product looks good and feels sturdy, but be prepared to earn it. Good luck—you’ll need it!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 30, 2020I received 2 large heavy boxes. After opening there was no instructions or hardware. Turns out there was a third box that arrived 2 days later. Assembly Instructions are pictures only. You have to really study the picture of each part to make sure the boards are in the correction position and side. This is particle board or similar and many boards had chips straight out of the box. When assembled the back has nothing to cover the bare particle board. The drawers bottoms are thin. They use plastic screws in the assembly of the drawer. The instructions seem to imply it takes 2 hours to install but it took me about 5 or 6 hours. I am not happy with the quality of this. Not sure it will not fall apart if ever I have to move it to another room. I don’t recommend this to anyone.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 19, 2020This looks great. However it’s a bastard start to finish. It came in several parts, strap tied so tightly it destroyed the edges of several pieces. Visible pieces. Next directions are pretty shoddy. I mean ikea gives you way more. Some details are just plain missing all together. Next I want to qualify myself first so you don’t think I’m some dummy who can’t read direction. I used to be a plumbing and hardware specialist as well. This had screws for the knobs that were 3 mm shy of even touching the knobs through the door. Lucky I keep tons of metric screw on hand and had some. Super frustrating to build, and too 4 freaking hours. I’m fast at building, have plenty experience doing so. This was by far the toughest and most time consuming. The lid had screws that’s come up the bottom that are counter sunk in, but the super soft particle board allows the screw to kappa going right past because it’s so soft. You quickly ruin your tip by screwing through from the bottom.

Fernanda LourencoReviewed in Canada on February 25, 20245.0 out of 5 stars Love the product
I have recently purchased this buffet and it looks great in my white kitchen. Very similar to my cabinets. It's a very sturdy and high quality furniture. Lots of people indicated that it's difficult to assemble it but I have a different opinion: the instructions are not well written but the pictures are very clear and easy to follow. Just separate all screws and parts on the floor (all screws are mixed in one bag) and follow the pictures. Not hard at all.
